Silence with Psalm 62
Silence has been called the first language of God. In I Kings 19, it was the “sound of silence” that elicited Elijah’s awe and humility. Silence takes away the distractions that our hearts hide behind. When things are noisy, we can distract ourselves from what’s really happening in our souls. Our explanations and defenses are laid down in silence, leaving us in purity before a good and gracious Savior. It can be scary, but it is purifying and full of awe.
In Psalms 62:1-2 (ESV), King David cries out, “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.” There is nothing magical about practicing silence, but it does express a deep trust in God that goes deeper than words.
Take 5-10 minutes to be quiet. Sit in silence and just listen. Quietly repeat the words of David; “For God alone my soul waits in silence.” Then, wait quietly. As thoughts and distractions rush in, simply pray the words of Psalms 62.
