Breath Prayer

Purpose

This practice refocuses your attention on God and is useful in transitions or in moments of stress.

Practice

Take a moment to step back from whatever you are doing (physically or spiritually). Relax and take several deep breaths. Then allow your breathing to return to normal and begin your breath prayer.

Some popular breath prayers are: “I am here, you are with me” or “I am a human being, not a human doing” or “Be still, and know I am God”.

You can also create your own breath prayer. One common formula is a name for God followed by your desire, such as “Holy Spirit, bring your peace” or “Good Father, you are my wisdom.”

Whisper or think the first half of the phrase as you inhale, the second half as you exhale. Repeat this for several minutes until you feel centered once again in the present moment, encircled by God’s care.
