Simple Daily Debrief [Examen]

  1. Relax and get comfortable in a place you won’t be disturbed. Remember that God’s gracious and loving gaze is always on you. Express to God your desire for the grace of seeing yourself and your day through His eyes.

  2. Shift your attention to reflecting on the events of your day. Invite the Holy Spirit to bring to mind whatever He wants and in whatever order He may desire to draw your attention to meaningful events. There’s no need to organize or control your thoughts.

  3. As your mind stops at something, ask yourself these questions:

    • When did I experience joy, peace, trust, hope, love? Savor these moments with God with gratitude and joy!

    • When did I experience anxiety, fear, judgment, criticalness, doubt, despair? No need to dwell on your shortcomings: that is not the point, simply express your sadness for that moment when you were not aware of God’s love. (This is not a time of self-analysis but rather awareness of God’s presence and your response).

  4. Ask God if there is any invitation, He may be giving you from what you have reflected on.

  5. Thank God for His presence and attentiveness to you throughout the day. Express any last thoughts or hopes/prayers for tomorrow.
